Articles Goal Setting Making real progress with your goals.
Making real progress with your goals.

During my workshops and training events I often ask participants for a show of hands of who sets goals for themselves, who writes these goals down and who reviews these goals on a regular basis. What I have noticed in particular over the past 12 months is that more and more people do in fact have clearly defined goals that are written down and are reviewed on a regular basis. I have also noticed however, that these same people are not making the type of progress they would like to achieve their goals; they can get distracted and loose focus. They do not seem that committed to putting in the “hard yards” to make their goals a reality.

I suggest that a significant reason why people are not following through on their goals or staying committed to achieving them is that they have not given sufficient thought or energy to making these goals a priority in their lives.

I have come across a great process recently that I believe can help you to get that focus and commitment needed to keep on track and actually achieve the goals you set for yourself. This process comes from the  Insights ® Discovery personality profiling system that I offer to my coaching and training clients.

This process is called G-WAVE. G stands for Goal, W; Why, A: Actions, V; Visualise and E; Engage support.

If you have written down your goals and have them clearly defined you have completed the G stage of this process.

Next comes the W for Why. You need to get crystal clear why this goal is so important to you. If you can’t get this clarity, then you might want to re-evaluate your goal. It is really worth while spending a lot of time on this. The more reasons you can give yourself, the more likely you will stay committed.

The next stage is A for Actions. What action do I need to take today to move myself towards my goal? What do I need to do after that? Once you have decided what this is – Go do it! Action creates momentum. The more momentum you generate the quicker you will realise your goal.

After Action comes V for Visualisation. I have written about the power of visualisation in the past and how every top athlete in the world uses visualisation to perform at their peak. In this process, visualise what your goal would look like, feel like, and sound like when you have achieved it. Notice how you feel when you have achieved your goal, notice where you are, who you are with, what you are doing. The more vivid and vibrant a picture you can paint the better.

The final step is E for Engage support. No man or woman is an island so seek out someone who can support and encourage you to stay on track. This might be a good friend, a family member or a Coach. Whoever you decide to work with, make sure they will support you and will not de-motivate you or deflate your enthusiasm.

I have started using this process myself and am seeing the results already. I have built a garage / office space that I was putting off for ages and I am moving  a lot quicker towards realising some key business goals I set for myself in September.

Give the G-WAVE process a go and let me know how you get on with it by dropping me an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
